West Oakland Green Initiative

We are a community based organization that has been operating since 2002.  Our mission is to plant trees in West Oakland.  Our fiscal sponsor is the Friends of Oakland Parks and Recreation, a 501 c (3). We also work closely with the City of Oakland, West Oakland Commerce Association, the Port of Oakland, West Oakland Environmental Indicators, PG&E, West Oakland Project Area Committee, and many West Oakland neighborhood groups.

WORP envisions a sustainable, thriving and attractive urban forest, composed of a wide spectrum of trees, shrubs, ground cover, and other vegetation that serve to enhance environmental quality and community health and opportunity. WORP encompasses the entire eco-system by striving to use local talent, resources and labor thereby promotes commerce and industry along with the well-being of the community.

Volunteer Viewpoint

For those who don’t know me, I’m a newer resident to the West Oakland community from Los Angeles. For someone who has NEVER participated in any community events, let alone a tree planting event, it was refreshing to finally meet all the neighbors and residents of Milton St and the West Oakland community at the Jan. 16th Tree Planting Event. I can already sense a change in the mentally of the neighborhood, a heighten sense of pride in ownership, where neighbors help neighbors to reach a common goal. I am optimistic to believe that the tree planting event will be a stepping stone in bringing the community together, to eventually combat other issues, such as crime, loitering, and general nuisance. It reminds us that we as a community can work together to bring about positive change. Thanks to Ariana Mohit and our Milton St Neighborhood Watch for inviting me to this event. I look forward to all future tree planting events here in West Oakland.

Sincerely,

Hugh Hoang ;
